Buxus Care Guide
Watering Recommendations
For New Buxus Balls
90% of the work has been done by us — the final 10% is simple care from you.
At the nursery we water each tree once a day, and twice a day on hot windy days.
After your Buxus leaves the nursery, continue the same watering routine.
Gradually reduce watering to twice per week after the first year.
General irrigation systems are not enough.
Formula:
2 litres of water per 10 litres of rootball per day.
Example: a 100L rootball = 20L of water daily (~2 buckets)
• Ensure water penetrates 500mm deep into the rootball.
• Check moisture using a sharpened piece of PVC pipe pushed to the bottom of the rootball.
Signs of Stress:
• Yellowing leaves
• Curling leaves
• Inside leaves falling off
Care Tip:
Use a soil wetting agent + liquid fertiliser like Seasol®. Never use regular fertiliser when a plant is stressed.
Important Note:
If using bore water, check pH + salt levels. No warranty applies for lack of care.
Feeding & Sunlight Requirements
Feeding
Buxus are nutrient-hungry plants
Feed once or twice in summer with a slow-release fertiliser
Newly planted Buxus require daily watering for the first year
Sunlight
Best in full sun, tolerates partial sun (min 5–6 hours daily)
Avoid pruning during extreme summer heat
Common Problems & Prevention
Right Plant, Right Place
• Avoid damp, shaded, constantly wet spots
• Choose disease-resistant varieties (your Californian variety)
Keep Plants Fit & Healthy
• Feed generously
• Water appropriately
• Healthy plants resist disease better
Prune at the Right Time
• Trim twice a year: August + after Christmas
• Only trim when foliage is dry
• Keep tools clean (dip snips in diluted disinfectant)
After-Pruning Spray
• Spray cuts immediately with copper to prevent disease spread
